Want .gov Links? Then Make a .gov Website!

How hard do you think it is to get .gov and .edu links to your site?

If you said hard, super hard, or impossible, you’re wrong. I already uncovered easy and free ways to get .edu links, but now I’ll show you how to get .gov links the easy way. (But note, I didn’t say it’s the cheap way…)

You start the process by reading up on how to qualify for a .gov domain name.

Then just start your own city.

Once that’s taken care of, you can request your .gov domain!

(OK, maybe starting your own city does qualify as “hard” ;) )

But seriously, you might be able to start an organization that is part of your local city government, and end up with a domain name like myorganization.mycity.gov. Or, slightly easier, try to partner with some agency that’s part of your local government. Maybe you can convince them to link to your related website.

Then it just becomes a question of “How much is a .gov link actually worth??”

About That VMN Toolbox

So why did I just go and post about this piece of software I found yesterday, within an hour of first hearing about it?

It’s quite simple, really.

First off, I hadn’t posted for a while! ;)

Second, they asked for a link! It’s that simple.

One good thing about putting out a quality free product is that people will generally tell their friends about it and/or link to it. But not everyone will, and a lot of people would, but just don’t think about it.

So take a lesson from VMN. They put a nice little box on the download page simply asking for a link. They make it easy to see the box and easy to place a link, since they give you the code right there. You probably noticed this if you did indeed download the software.

If you have a nice piece of software you’re giving out for free, start asking for a link back to your site. But be sure to make it noticeable!

Bonus lesson: While I’m talking about VMN, let me just say that they did a great job with their site. After seeing the animation with the screenshots, I couldn’t resist checking it out! If you can integrate something like that into your offer, do it!
