OnlyWire Gets Greedy – Don’t Waste $2.99 On This!

onlywire 2.0 logo

As soon as OnlyWire.com launched a while back, I thought it was pretty cool. I even said OnlyWire was great for internet marketers.

If you haven’t heard of OnlyWire, it’s a social bookmarking tool that lets you bookmark websites to all your social bookmarking accounts with one click. Kind of like a mass-submission software for spamming social bookmark websites would do.

Why a regular web user would need more than one social bookmarking account, I’m not sure.

But this was the perfect tool for internet marketers that wanted to jump into the social media craze without doing much work.

So, considering I didn’t need OnlyWire to post to my sole del.icio.us account, I hadn’t logged in to my OnlyWire account for 6 months or more. But then I got an email the other day that reminded me of the service.

There were four parts…

The friendly introduction thanking you for using the service and reminding you that you actually signed-up for this and should therefore not report it as spam:

Dear OnlyWire User:

Thank you for signing up with OnlyWire – the fastest, easiest way to submit web content to all your social bookmarking sites automatically.

Throwing the product description in there makes for a nice transition to the next part…

The bragging and gloating making the service sound amazing and reinforcing the idea that you made a good decision by signing-up for it:

Over the past year, OnlyWire has become the most popular bookmark submission tool on the Internet and has won some notable acclaim. OnlyWire also became a valuable member of SNiPiTRON, LLC, a web-based software development company that provides Bookmarking and Collaboration tools for capturing, organizing and sharing bookmarks, content, and files with clients, co-workers and friends. With the SNiPiTRON platform, OnlyWire has now become the Number One Bookmarking Tool on the web.

Then they state the reason you should use OnlyWire again, even if you got bored with it:

We have made many improvements to OnlyWire. With these enhancements we are pleased to launch OnlyWire 2.0. Using a stable, secure and optimized platform for enhanced performance and reliability, OnlyWire 2.0 is BETTER and FASTER. Some of the recent improvements include: faster submission processes, increased bookmark links and improved functionality (to mention just a few). We are very proud of these enhancements and urge you to check out the new release at www.OnlyWire.com.

At this point you should be really excited about how awesome OnlyWire is and can’t imagine life without it. Which means you are primed for…

The “oh yeah, we’re going to start charging for the service” details:

With this new release, OnlyWire is implementing a “Pay or Promote” program. To continue to use OnlyWire, we are asking all existing users to choose an account option – one is FREE and the other is a paid version. The choices follow:

  1. FREE version — To continue to use OnlyWire for FREE, all you need to do is add the Bookmark & Share button to your website. To choose this option and to add the Bookmark & Share Button to your website’s homepage, click here.

  2. PAID version —If you do not want to add the Bookmark & Share button to your homepage, you can simply pay a small fee of $2.99 per month or a discounted annual fee of $24.99 (a 30% savings). You can pay this fee via credit or debit card. To sign up, click here.

They have the gall to start charging a monthly fee for their service! That is anti-Web 2.0 if I’ve ever seen it.

But there’s a simple solution to this dilemma

Remember how I said this was a great service for internet marketers? Well, any time internet marketers find a good concept, hundreds of them will copy it.

Here’s the proof – projects on Get a Freelancer and Script Lance.

Out of the hundreds of clones, a few survive and even attract a few users. So all you have to do is find one of these sites and use it instead.

Like this one – Social Marker. Or SocialMatic. It looks like a worthy substitute.

It’s not like the $2.99 per month is a lot of money, but it’s pointless to pay for such a service. Heck, you could buy web hosting for $2.99 per month and you should end up with a positive ROI.

It’s also the principal of the matter! No spammer is going to stand for a $2.99 monthly charge!

nice cold beer

Wow! I think you may have missed the value of our solution as there is much more to it then you may realize. Take for example your use of the ShareThis button on your site above. We have a Bookmark and Share button that blows it away.

I hope you will visit the site and learn more about our true value. If you would like to chat you have my email.

    Thanks
    Ryan

  2. Karoline Ace on December 3rd, 2008

Well, i don’t see a problem using them for free with that button which promotes them. It’s normal to give credits to things that are worth, and that you have advantage of.

  3. Ruby Web on December 3rd, 2008

Well it seemed like a short cut for marketer to make a quick buck from social media.

  4. Darren Little on December 3rd, 2008

All you have to do is post their button on your website and the use of the service is free.

  5. Mikael Rieck on December 4th, 2008

I don’t agree that Social Marker is a substitute for OnlyWire. SM is far more manual and takes much more time.

A way to keep using OnlyWire without paying is to link back to them from one of your websites. Personally I have a domain that is just sitting there because I haven’t had time to do anything with it. It is perfect as a placeholder for that link.

  6. SEO GTA on December 4th, 2008

I have never been impressed by them nor used them, they are no more than form filler service I can not see them helping (bringing something new) at all

  7. ubey on December 6th, 2008

well.. i just need to try

  8. Blog Flipping Fool on December 8th, 2008

I am not sure if you are kidding or not. I personally use socialmarker and it is manually intensive. If OnlyWire is faster and automated, it is worth it because there are so many tedious manual tasks that need to be done to promote your websites. Even with tools like socialmarker and OnlyWire, I found that I needed to hire a VA just to keep up.

Thomas C. Gajdjis – The Blog Flipping Fool :)

  9. Sucker on December 8th, 2008

I’m kidding in the sense that all auto-bookmarkers are lame and unnecessary.

  10. Ruby Web on December 9th, 2008

I just hate it when that happens, freeware rpoviders start wanting to charge you for their product after you have downloaded, installed and used it.

  11. Jericho New York Real Estate on December 15th, 2008

I agree with you Ruby! that happens to my Brother in law just a month ago.

  12. money on December 19th, 2008

It is a nice tool to do shortcut for your social media work. we should post its button to website and give some credit to use it free.

  13. spyegg on December 28th, 2008

Seems worthy if you have already taken the vast time to set up the accounts. i.e. SM Users

  14. Cheap web hosting. on January 2nd, 2009

I used only wire a few times. I think thier are 3 more i have tried that are similar. If i find the list of them i will post them so you can look at them.

One i remember is posttoaster i think that is name.

  15. Iron Works in NG on January 6th, 2009

I’ve never used such thing, but it would be nice to see the names from the previuos reply.

  16. Real estate Florida on January 7th, 2009

I tried Onlywire after reading you post i not found so much useful to pay bucks, this kind of many free tool available in market but thx for new tool ….. i got some new site from it…

  17. George on January 7th, 2009

I used it, but I was ticked off that they want to charge for it so I am going to look at some of the alternatives. I always get ticked off when something I was getting for free becomes a paid service. However, when a paid service becomes free I don’t mind. Too bad for them, I think they made a big mistake.

  18. Cancer Treatment Florida on January 8th, 2009

OnlyWire is best social bookmarking site. This site has good features for bookmarking. I like it.

  19. SEO Services on January 9th, 2009

I too listen about social market but I am not much aware of it. Thanks for the detailed description about the social media and the tips…

  22. Make Money On The Internet on January 25th, 2009

Heck, I’m new to your blog and it’s great. Well, I never knew of this service(OnlyWire) and I’ll be taking a beginning of automated social bookmarking. Thanks for those two links to websites!

  23. Email list business on January 26th, 2009

Loaded only wire but never used it didnt find it that useful and I dont really want to spend all day bookmarking sites..how can they charge for this?

  24. Tom - Home Business on January 28th, 2009

I have focused on the 10 biggest social media sites and submit manually to them.Instead of Onlywire there is another one called Social Marker that works fine, and is free.

  25. Josh on January 29th, 2009

Thanks for the tool, I have rseolved to get into social bookmarking this month so this should be a valuable resource.

  26. Nate the aerial advertising guy on January 30th, 2009

I have been looking for ways to increase traffic too. This blog is so funny, yet actually helpful in the ways that it reviews services. Thanks

    Nate

  27. Payroll Tampa on February 2nd, 2009

I seen onlywire not get impressed that much, many believes manual bookmarking get more benefited…

  28. Ruby Web on February 4th, 2009

Thank you for the heads up, we usually fall victim of such premium software when there’s a much better free one.

  29. Wii Accessories on February 5th, 2009

OnlyWire’s response wasn’t too convincing in my opinion.

  30. Sucker on February 6th, 2009

    @Wii

Haha yeah. The only difference I saw between ShareThis and OnlyWire is that OnlyWire’s button displays ads!

The only way to get rid of those ads is to pay the $3 monthly fee. Lame.

  31. Phoenixville Real estate on February 16th, 2009

i found only wasting of time like this sites, always different service rather they offers.

  32. SSL Certificates on February 19th, 2009

OnlyWire is good site but it is paid therefore so many visitor don’t use this site for bookmarking.

  33. I do not think that this is a good serive, for it takes a long time to fill in the usernames and passwords.

I would rather do it manually

  34. Mold removal on March 1st, 2009

Thanks i have to try social marker. I used only wire a few times before and it worked good. Not sure if i want to pay for it since more sites offer the same service now.

  35. Web Design on March 2nd, 2009

It’s really Great tool. In one time submit site in many Social Bookmark site. Thanks For Sharing.

  36. Web design Miami on March 2nd, 2009

I don’t see a reason to not use socialmarker for it.

Paying for services in web 2.0? NO WAY!

  37. Miami web design on March 4th, 2009

They target people who have avoiding rules and doing everything the cheapest way possible in their blood. I don’t think trying to charge them was a good move.

  38. It is indeed great tool. But I have some some people always prefer to do it manually than doing it automatically.

  39. Get One way links on March 5th, 2009

Most people do not believe in automatic tools. Since automatic tools submit sites instantly to hundreds of sites, site may get penalized by SE.

  40. Tjene på bloggen on March 5th, 2009

Automatic tools are great! If they are free, even better. But i do understand that they would like to make some money with their at the time revolutionary software. The problem is as you stated in the post that everyone copies a good idea, and soon the software is just one of a million…

  41. Affiliate Business on March 6th, 2009

yeah I stick onlywire on a free blogspot just to keep it active

  42. Singapore Property on March 8th, 2009

I personally don’t fave websites that forces us to promote their websites through share buttons and this will allow us to have it free to use. If that’s the case, I would rather choose delicious.

  43. Psychosomatische Kur on March 17th, 2009

Thanks for this post, I will give it a try soon :-)

  44. Home Teeth Whitening on March 18th, 2009

I just signed up for their service, don’t see too much impact though

  45. Internet Marketing Training on March 18th, 2009

I use SocialMarker but it does take a bit of time to submit to all the sites. I tried OnlyWire version 1.0 and it looks like they’ve fixed some problems they were having with that with the release of the 2.0 version but I sure wish it was still free.

  46. Ken on March 18th, 2009

Thank you. It seems that only wire are having some problem.

  47. London Tours on March 19th, 2009

We have been using this for a while on one of our sites and it works well I think.

  48. spa st.petersburg on March 20th, 2009

Good. Onlywire is free service providing for bookmarking. I will try it.

  49. Computer Repair St Pete on March 25th, 2009

I think it is really required free version of OnlyWire. If customer satisfy with your service than they will apply for paid version.

  50. Water Treatment St Petersburg on March 25th, 2009

Wow. Thanks for sharing good information. Onlywire is really helpful for my bookmarking.

  51. Home Healthcare Sarasota on March 26th, 2009

As you said correct no need to waste “$” for onlywire.

  52. Comet Plasma TV on March 26th, 2009

exactly what i was telling my friend but that sob wasn’t convinced :S

  53. Zaslony on April 2nd, 2009

Good luck with that. I don’t think anyone will use it in a month or two. Maybe some users will stay because it’s easier to pay than to find a new service but most people will switch to the free competitors.

  54. Michael on April 5th, 2009

I don’t think it’s anti-web 2.0 at all for them to start charging. Consider the fact that this service costs THEM money just to run – It’s not unreasonable to charge $3 a month. It’s business.

  55. papi on April 13th, 2009

All good things start as free versions, but soon after becoming popular, they start charging.

  56. Party Rentals Florida on April 15th, 2009

Nobody going to use such service, not Surprise it may close soon.

  57. Brian on April 15th, 2009

Boo hoo. It’s like $3. If it saves you let’s say 10 minutes a month it should be worth the cost unless you are making NO money at all online.

Maybe I’m the odd one, but I will pay for software and services that save me time cause I can make more per hour doing more important things than wasting my time with tasks that can be automated or outsourced.

  58. Sucker on April 16th, 2009

    @Brian

There are free alternatives that work better than OnlyWire. If you want to pay $3 for an inferior product, that’s fine with me.

  59. Waterfront Homes FL on April 17th, 2009

I will try to Onlywire. I hope it’s easy to use and manage bookmarking work.

  60. Carpet Flooring Bradenton on April 20th, 2009

Agree with Sucker many alternatives and options available, and you can use money at proper place which give more benefit.

  61. Retirement Planning Tampa on April 22nd, 2009

I was tried it and agree with you. there is no need to spent some amount in only wire.
    thanks.

  62. Roofing St Petersburg on April 22nd, 2009

I think manually bookmarking is good way to any other tool. But i will try it.

  63. wrought iron canopy beds on April 25th, 2009

I believe onlywire have provided over the time I’ve been with them a good service, i mean a ‘laborers worth his wages’ and if the roles were reversed and you spent the time effort into a product ( yes it is a product) like onlywire out of your pocket then you’d expect to get some type of return for your efforts, don’t you think? Struth your giving up a BigMac once a month which instead of killing you slowly (the burger) will increase your sites exposure (onlywire)- my 2c worth ;)

  64. Herbalife on April 29th, 2009

I always liked OnlyWire but I am now quite annoyed that I see they have used my account to do some auto-bookmarking for onlywire in my name!!

  65. Sucker on April 30th, 2009

    @Herbalife

That’s funny. Not only are they getting free advertising that way, you’re probably paying them for it.

Gives me an idea though. Start a bookmarking service, wait for the users to pile in, then use their accounts to bookmark all my other web pages!

  66. Kathleen on April 30th, 2009

    Is Onlywire the best socialmarker?

  67. Dan on May 13th, 2009

You can actually get the service for free if you put a little onlywire box on one of your websites. I have a really old website that makes a couple bucks here and there each month and that’s where this code ended up.

There aren’t any traffic requirements or anything so it seems like a legitimate way of using the service without paying for it.

  68. Axel on June 6th, 2009

What are you people complaining about? Are you making money while using someone else’s product? Since when do other people have a duty to put in time, effort, and expense to create something and then give it to you for free? Would you do it?

  69. Iphone Wallpapers on June 13th, 2009

yes i once use onlywire on my blog too, then when they charge small amount of money, i remove it, better use sociable plugin for wordpress

  70. prefabrik on June 15th, 2009

Thank you for the heads up, we usually fall victim of such premium software when there’s a much better free one.

  71. Replacement Window on June 17th, 2009

Never paid for any software, and never will. Personally dont see the point of it, you can usually find a free software that does the job just as well.

  72. Finance Advisory Stop on July 6th, 2009

Funny to see that the first comment on this is from an OnlyWire representative. Nonetheless, the software does seem somewhat attractive to webmasters.

  73. ubieranki on July 17th, 2009

Yes, anothere way to take money from web-users. Some people think that every method is good, and not everyone is aware of SEO principles. Well… Nice post.

  74. Ruri on July 21st, 2009

I saw someone having more than 200 bookmarking site accounts. This Onlywire looks great. But as long as I know all bookmarking site do not allow auto submission. Therefore they have captcha in their site.

  75. Emu Oil Guy on July 23rd, 2009

@Herbalife It sounds dodgy if they are using your account..

  76. evan on July 25th, 2009

yea dont waste your time or money…

  77. real estate investing guy on August 13th, 2009

Are you kidding me! Are you guys actually upset about paying $2.99 a month for a tool to promote your business???

  78. Free Host on August 15th, 2009

“No spammer is going to stand for a $2.99 monthly charge!”

Thats a real gem, i’m gonna use it as my sig.

To the poster above, its not about the money, its about paying for something thats worse that the free version.

  79. Buy PSP Go on August 16th, 2009

This is a stupid move, like you said – spammers would rather pay and get a custom script that spams more and is more efficient.

  80. Walter on August 26th, 2009

An automatic tool submissions can be considered as a spam by bookmark service, is it? It seems to be very easy to catch such submitters.

As for free submitters mentioned above, it’s too boring to make more than 1-2 bookmarks in each service.

  81. Paid Surveys Online on October 9th, 2009

I’ve been thinking about playing with social bookmark services. Trust me, dozens of companies want to be the next delicious. There are so many new players, in fact, I was pleased to find an all-in-one social bookmarking manager called OnlyWire. You give OnlyWire all of your logins to a growing list of social bookmarking sites, and you can use just one bookmarklet to post a page to all of them at once.

I admit, I sign up for all kinds of things before really thinking about them, and certainly a site that wants to collect a dozen logins and passwords is one I should have probably avoided. That said, OnlyWire got several positive notices from legitimate “Web 2.0? blogs, and is a very useful service (as we all wait to see which social bookmark services survive). I’ve e-mailed them and hope this troubling development can be sorted out.

  82. Juice on October 30th, 2009

I have the free one and i don’t see any benfit to it at all. It seems to be useless. I havent seen any increase only a few blocks from sites like newsvine. Does this work or what?

  83. jason on November 9th, 2009

well, I paid the 2.99 and I feel good about the service, the biggest reason is since i paid it gave me A bit more drive and set up A account with all the book marking sites, A task I been putting off for some time, and it adds a nice little share button that my customers may or may not click on , it makes the site look a bit more on the ball. and thirdly it let me update all the sites at once. so ya its worth the 2.99 or putting A link to them in my opinion. Good luck to you all :)

  84. estetik on November 19th, 2009

I think only wire is a useful tool.

  85. Steve on November 24th, 2009

Well Guys, I have to say that I tried Onlywire & initial it wasn’t too bad, but after a while errors in submission started creeping in ! What really bugged me more than anything else was that when I contacted the support at Onlywire & explained that I was now getting at least a 50% failure rate on submissions, I was fobbed off with “Check your login details”!

Shit I had been using this tool for 6 months, do they expect that my login details are changing themselves…? Sorry but if these people cannot be bothered to deal with problems in a sensible manner, then I cannot be bothered to support them either !

  86. payroll system on November 30th, 2009

I personally ingest socialmarker and it is manually intensive. If OnlyWire is faster and automated, it is worth it because there are so many tedious manual tasks that need to be finished to promote your websites. Even with tools like socialmarker and OnlyWire, I found that I needed to hire a VA meet to keep up.

  87. dragon boat on December 7th, 2009

I used onlywire for a good while as both paid and free… in the end just ended up paying someone to do it manually for me.

i still use the free account for somethings.. but i prefer to randomize my bookmarking and keep it as natural as possible.

  91. Jamie Paterson on January 20th, 2010

This is so funny…Why would you waste such when there re tons of free tools or softwares you can use in bookmarking? They just differ to one another in terms of usage and interface I guess but same results just different amounts of effort…

  92. English Dubbed Anime on February 1st, 2010

I found OnlyWire today, when I was trying to look for a way to submit a bunch of URLs to all my Social websites. Some friends said try SENuke, while others said OnlyWire was free – so try it instead. I did, and no way I’m paying for that when there are free programs out there that do the exact same thing lol.

  93. allister on February 3rd, 2010

Wow, Im sorry but this is a terrible article on what appears to be a terrible website. This site is about internet marketing? And you ask why someone would want more than one social bookmarking site? you say Onlywire is like a spamming software?

    Holy Cow.

I am not affiliated with Onlywire, i do use them, it is of value to most internet marketers and most of it is free.

  94. Jeremy on February 16th, 2010

I agree. Save your money. There are oodles of free tools out there, many better than OnlyWire.
