HyperWebEnable.com – Free Website? What’s The Catch?

The other day I got a cheesy email from a so-called Silicon Valley start-up…

Hi,
we are a startup www.hyperwebenable.com based on silicon valley.
providing next generation blogging service.
we have seen your blog its very interesting we request to write review
about our service in your blog it will be useful to all your readers .
We will be happy to provide more info about our service.
Thanks and regards

Apparently they thought they could bypass my $3000 review fee by using impeccable grammar and saying that their service is useful to all my readers. But it’s never that simple in the dog-eat-dog world of internet marketing.

But luckily for them, I thought this would make a good post, so here we go…

The domain was weird enough I almost skipped by it, but funny looking enough I checked it out – hyperwebenable.com.

Just look at the domain, it’s funny. But once I looked it a while, I realized it’s “hyper web enable” which must mean something like “making you able to be on the web at hyper speeds.”

Free hosting, right? Like getting a blogspot subdomain? (But at warped speed, of course!)

Nope. I was surprised – you actually get a real domain, for free.

The only catch – you choose from a dropdown menu of domains. You can’t just pick whatever you want. (There are some nice domains on the list though, like giveawaycity.com.)

Sounds pretty good, right? But what’s in it for them?

(Always ask yourself this, because there is no such thing as a free lunch.)

It appears to me that they are giving out free sites in order to build a large network of publishers so they can sell ad space in large quantities over the network.

They provide the money and infrastructure, you do the work, and then they make lots more money from advertising. It’s a clever idea.

I didn’t see this mentioned in the terms, but I bet the website publishers have to meet some sort of minimum traffic requirements in order to keep their site from being closed down and the domain given to someone else. Otherwise HyperWebEnable would be wasting money on dormant sites.

Even so, it could maybe possibly be a neat way to get started online for free.

Just remember to read the terms for things like who owns and controls the domain name, whether or not you can place your own ads on the site, etc. Also, could they seize control of your site at any time? Did you agree to turn over copyright of all your work to them once it’s published on the site?

I couldn’t find any of that stuff specifically in the terms, but those are just concerns I would have if I were starting a business and hosting a website with them.

This looks like it would be better for someone doing a hobby site, not for beginning a long-term venture.

* For example, they mention that you can make money with your site. But that doesn’t necessarily mean you can put third-party ads on the site. It might just mean that you can refer others to HyperWebEnable and then get a $1 reward for each referral.

And they don’t exactly have a clean record of customer satisfaction.

But props to the founders for their ingenuity, even if the execution was less than stellar…

I think if you are going to put the time and effort into your blogs than it is worth it to have your domain and hosting, it is cheap enough and you have control. Who knows what a free platform plans to do down the road after you put all your hard earned effort into it.

  2. Karoline Ace on November 14th, 2008

Well, as you have said, there is nothing so valuable and has quality for free. They have very good idea, but they also have rights to change their terms whenever they want, so basically they own all the rights to the domain and the website. For serious webmasters and bloggers that is unacceptable.

  3. T-Home on November 14th, 2008

As you have said there is no mention of who owns the domain in their terms. Thanks for your valid points which would help us to caution our friends about this.

  4. Tracy on November 14th, 2008

I have to agree with the others if you are going to put the time and effort into a blog own it yourself so you can control it and reap the rewards of your success.

  5. Roger Hamilton on November 15th, 2008

Hmm.. guess we have to be more careful.

  6. Small Business Marketing on November 15th, 2008

I’d agree with all the others – it’s definitely worth starting a blog on your own with your own domain. The last thing you want is to invest time and effort creating a popular blog / website only to have its future rely on a startup company.

It looks to be an interesting service for those new to internet marketing and blogging though – a good way to experiment.

  7. Dave on November 16th, 2008

I wouldn’t even consider them. Paid services are cheap enough as it is and you have control. Also would Google penalize a website hosted by a service like that in the future? What’s the point of putting all that work into a website that may struggle in the search engine rankings? It is best to leave it alone.

Hello there! I am so glad that I have visited your blog. You know what, I am one of the those customers who isn’t satisfied at all. At first, it was but as my “free blog” ages, I was beginning to regret stumbling the hyper website. I decided to transfer the posts I made on that blog to my own domain. At least, I can do anything I want with it.

I also made a post about it but yours was more detailed. You can check my post about blogging basics. Now, I believe that there is really no such thing as a free lunch.

  9. Butterfinger Candy Bars on November 17th, 2008

It’s indeed a clever idea, I wonder if they have like traffic requirements like you said earlier but for each website there? What if I just created a website and didn’t promote it at all?

  10. Sucker on November 17th, 2008

    @Butterfinger

They would probably close your account and make the domain name available for someone else. That’s my guess.

  11. cyrus jay on November 21st, 2008

  15. Pavan Kumar on November 24th, 2008

Hyperwebenable has a minimum traffic requirement of 100 hits per day, but they do not remove you the next day when you make less than 100 hits. Also, to get 100 hits, you will be given a month of time from beginning. You have another alternative too, its 15 posts/ momnth. Even this one is a nice thing.

I am a hyperwebenable user since a long time and have built a good profile on blogosphere, all this is possible because of hyperwebenable.

All you guys are just commenting on the service without giving it a try :(

I am a long time customer and am very satisfied from their service.

  16. espresso machines on November 30th, 2008

But free hosting getting trouble some times right , my friend using that only some time its not opening, its takes time to open the web site . I don’t know about this site hosting…….

  17. Gurpreet Singh on December 1st, 2008

This Is Great News But They Have Some T & C Read It First To apply them. They Will Use Their Adsense Code with your adsense code In their Free Hosted Blog. This is The Main Fact I know

  18. Rajasekaran on December 5th, 2008

They are listed their features then how can cheat its members?I think it is useful servie.

  19. Pweng Bee on December 5th, 2008

Well, from the previous comments, I think HyperWebEnable is choosy to whom they wanted to provide their services. I requested for at least five domains and they only gave me one. I recommended it to my friends and I am so ashamed that they were a bit disappointed.

  20. Ruby Web on December 9th, 2008

Wow, these guys are pretty smart. But then again you’re right, this is good for someone running a hobby site and not a long-term venture.

I’ll click on the link and check them out. ;-)

  21. Online Marketing Promotion on December 11th, 2008

    Good points made here.
For a serious internet marketer (like me!), it’s worth having peace of mind and paying the small monthly fee for a legitimate web host (and of course, backing up your code as well).

On the subject of terms of service, guarantees and the like, I find that these can be pretty shallow when push comes to shove. Trying to get your money refunded from an online company can be a real art form (one that I have not mastered).

  22. money on December 19th, 2008

It is a clever idea to make money online, but needs lot of hard work and traffic to your site.

  23. Logiczone on January 2nd, 2009

This is really illogical presentation. They are fooling people! Just read the terms and conditions.

They have a gray colored line and where the catch is. I think it’s in line 15. And just being in the catch means you’re a dead meat.

  24. Custom Web Development on January 13th, 2009

Good resource. I will use hyperwebenable for my blog. Thanks for information.

  25. PS3 on January 25th, 2009

Will anyone get their domain names through this means? Thanks for highlighting us the sentence phrasing they use for ad spaces and how play around with words to be at the winning side.

  32. Dieta on March 9th, 2009

The customer satisfaction record is always the most important thing to look for. No ammount of data and graphs will be able to change my mind once I read couple really bad customer reviews.

  33. gdirectory on March 10th, 2009

Good idea, but still you need a real traffic and hard work, which is essential every where.

    Thanks

  34. cue directory on March 10th, 2009

Will give it a try and see if it works well.

  35. Mandeloperation on March 17th, 2009

  38. Liftchair on April 18th, 2009

Hyperwebenable registers the domain in its name. Not urs.
If you are getting 100 page views per day then you can easily make atleast $10 which you can pay for your own domain. Rather than getting it from here. By placing ads in your site it gets more money than it paid for the domain name.
If your blog gets famous then you wont get full control coz the company owns the domain.

  39. Roofing St Petersburg on April 22nd, 2009

Interesting post. Free website with ad network good feature. I will create a site with hyperwebenable.

  42. Entrepreneurs Journey on April 28th, 2009

Yeah I agree with liftchair here, if your serious about blogging it could be very dangerous if they own the rights.

  43. Las Vegas Web Design on April 28th, 2009

There is always a catch somewhere when people offer something for FREE. Marketers use the word FREE all of the time and that might be true monetarily, but I am sure there is some reason behind the madness.

  44. aktenium.net on May 2nd, 2009

I agree with most of you. Why should one trust such a service when he can get a full year of web hosting (including a domain name) with $50-$60?

  45. Preinstalled Scripts on May 5th, 2009

Hi, this seems a great techniques as by giving a small fish they are to catch the big one. But such companies should clarify everything as it is the customers who has to decide whether to join them or not.Insufficient details may pull them in doubt.

  46. camschat on May 18th, 2009

This idea it is not new, the only difference they are giving a free domain name. I think Squidoo or hubpages maybe better.

  47. michael sommer on June 8th, 2009

yeah, i agree with most of you. It is definitely a good marketing strategy for them.

  48. gas card on June 16th, 2009

Yes, there is always that catch to look for when an offer comes up. Haha I was cracking up at your comment “by using impeccable grammar”. Wow though, seems like you really did the homework on this one, its important to read the terms, but sometimes you have to dig a bit deeper to find out what you are really getting into, like this case in which you are providing them with their much needed online labor, and also run the risk of having to later comply with any charges they request.
