Spheres Are The New Pixels

In a world of complex websites like aggregators that aggregate existing aggregators, it’s extremely beneficial to reduce great ideas down to simple formulas. I do this all the time, but here are a couple of my favorites:

1) Million Dollar Homepage + Publicity = Cool, Innovative Idea

2) Million Dollar “X” + Lack of Originality + No Effort = Lame Knockoff

I’m not smart enough to add any variables or derivatives into these equations (probably because I dropped out of high school to pursue a Web 2.0 million dollar social network,) but they are still useful for general applications.

For example, take the website you want to analyze and plug it in to the second equation. I’ll pick an example out of the blue, oh, let’s see… how about AdSpheres.com.

adspheres sphere ads

And I’m in luck! www.adspheres.com is supposedly a “totally unique” new way to advertise, but when plugged into my equations, the scientific method yields the same result: “Lame Knockoff”

The formula could be wrong, though, as it’s only 99.9% accurate. (And we know all know that 99.9% usually means 55%, at least in terms of web hosting uptime.) So you have to validate the answer.

Now, to validate your findings, you have to check over the website and consider your gut feeling…

Well, um… in this case, I guess I’m totally wrong. My formula would lead me to believe this is a pixel advertising knockoff, but it is actually the most innovative website I’ve ever seen. It’s obviously different and innovative because they use spheres instead of pixels. Wow!

Just plain genius!

For just $1 you get a tiny ad on a site that no one will see unless they themselves are gullible enough to get roped into the whole “sphere buying” scheme. If they’re that gullible, you could easily convince them to buy just about any worthless $47 ebook!

Now I’m off to buy spheres that say “Did You Just Waste $1 On A Lame Ad? Then CLICK HERE to discover how to gain massive traffic to your website overnight, with no work required!” ;)

*laughs* originality, what’s that? Seriously, I thought we were all supposed to do the exact same thing as everything else — so that we can over saturate the marketplace. That’s the way it works right? Too much of a good thing is wonderful? I’m heading over there right now and buying up a dozen of these adorably amazing ad spheres, everyone else do it too, so you can see my ads! This isn’t multi-level marketing, it’s not even a scam, it’s the real deal! I’m converted.

  2. Dave on April 16th, 2008

How can the traffic from this type of advertising possibly be any good? Its not targeted and will not convert well.

  3. Sandy Allen on April 16th, 2008

Too Funny! I need to go out get “adcubes.com”, “adpyramids.com”, and maybe even “adtrapezoids.com”

  4. Melanie Phung, the Original on April 16th, 2008

But it’s so shiny and pretty! I mean there are gradients and shadows n’ stuff, so it’s got to be way more sophisticated than the pixel ads, right?

  5. Sucker on April 17th, 2008

If they added sparkles like all the Myspace glitter graphics, I’d be hooked for sure!

Sandy, you forgot “adtongues.com.” Buy ads on tongues sticking out at you.

I was waiting for you to make fun of this one, Sucker. You should actually buy a sphere to taunt them. I’m curious to see what would happen if I paid $132 to take the top sphere spot and created a sphere that said “Adspheres sucks.” Would they be greedy enough to take the money? If they actually took your money and allowed that sphere to be the top spot, the linkbait factor and sheer hilarity might actually justify the price.

If they reject the ad, I could also imagine an amusing email exchange where I see what price would eventually cause them to cave in and accept the ad. But why do I feel like it wouldn’t be an issue?

Also, the official adsphere blog almost made me spit my drink out. Look at this post about how to make your sphere worth more money: http://www.adspheres.com/blog/?p=5 “For every fifteen friends that you invite, you will add one dollar to your Sphere’s value.” Wow, thanks adspheres! I think I’m beginning to understand the real reason Adspheres was created. It was to make a central repository of people in a certain I.Q. bracket.

  7. Sucker on April 18th, 2008

You only have to invite 15 friends and they credit a whole entire imaginary dollar value to your sphere?! Wow!!

The scary thing is, this really could “make a central repository of people in a certain I.Q. bracket”

  8. free ipod touch on April 19th, 2008

I kept track of the milliondollarhomepage project and it’s sister site pixelotto.com. The second simply ran off the popularity of the first. As it was just a copy though, it soon faltered and never reached the million dollar target. The winner was a person from Kenya.

Stupid ideas only really work once.

  9. Affiliate marketing noob on April 21st, 2008

Does anybody really think that’s good traffic? It seems pretty useless to me.
    *checks if milliondollarwaffles is free*
And the “refer 15 friends and you’ll earn a virtual dollar” thing is absolutely ridiculous.

  10. JB on April 22nd, 2008

lol, horrible idea… and I agree, the traffic would suck

  11. Phyllis V on April 22nd, 2008

ooohh pretty! I want to add that adfat.com is also a great money maker, as you can put ads on anyplace that has body fat, and since most Americans are obese, well…I should be a millionaire in about…..hm…3 minutes!

  12. Maxwell on April 22nd, 2008

There’s also this site: http://www.thesocialmillionaire.com/ It seems that these sites pop up every 2 seconds, like a baby being born.

  13. Murali on April 27th, 2008

Just came across your blog. One of the best blogs i’ve seen lately. Especially loved your stupid E-Book site.

  14. Mr Review on April 29th, 2008

This reminds me of the million dollar pixel page.
Same concept, just a bit more fancy.

I wonder how they plan on marketing adspheres to the masses and if people will actually bite into this advertising source.

    Regards,
    Mr Review

Funny Ha! I know tomorrow I am planning to open “AdNoShape.com” and sell any shape for $1, would you buy please!! :D

“Million Dollar Homepage Publicity = Cool, Innovative Idea”

Yeah, it was truly innovative idea back in ‘99. After that, internet has been filled with these wannabe-million pixel sites no-one cares. Spheres are just as lame as those wannabe pixel sites.

  17. California Beach Vacations on May 8th, 2008

I wonder why people keep making these types of sites? I have no clue!

  18. Yabadaba on May 9th, 2008

Because idiots keep buying links on them?

  19. Cold Play Tribute King on May 9th, 2008

How can it help to increase the website’s traffic?

  20. Joe on May 12th, 2008

Harsh but fair! I actually bought a pixel on the million dollar home page for one of my old clients and they still get traffic to this day. :)

  21. How To Get A Six Pack on May 26th, 2008

I cant understand these types of sites either. I was speaking to someone who thought making one would be the best money earner ever a few week back lol

    Hey:

    Thanks for the good posting!

We are actually the creators of AdSpheres.

The project was created by an intern on our team as a test of some underlying technology. And in actually, it has been very successful for us as a way to test other technologies.

Any how, I am a believer that all publicity is good publicity! So this posting is great publicity.
