Is The Million Dollar Wiki a Scam?

We all know that the Million Dollar Wiki is over hyped, and it will probably fade out of the public eye within a few months. But could things be worse?

See, they claim that the site will be live at least 15 years.

With the initial sales, the hosting expenses have been secured for the first 15 years, and guarantee that the site will run until May of 2022. Our intention is to keep the site up forever.

But if that’s the case, why does the domain expire in 2008?

whois for milliondollarwiki

The hosting won’t do much good if there is no domain name…

That’s not the full story though. I noticed some other fishy stuff going on…

For example, the number of spam pages that they sold. I don’t mean crappy pages, because they sold a TON of them… more like duplicate word pages.

I can’t find the place I saw this, but I was sure they had specific guidelines that only one page for each topic would be sold, each word had to make sense, it couldn’t be a verb, etc.

But take a look at the index page:

milliondollarwiki spam pages

I see 4 pages about 0% Interest Credit Cards and 5 pages about how to Apply for a Credit Card. Not to mention one for “Airline Tickets” and one for “Airlinetickets.”

Further down the page I found “Bestcreditcardstorecom.” You gotta be kidding me. Not only should that page not be allowed (since “Bestcreditcardstorecom” is not in the dictionary or even used as slang,) whoever bought a page using that ‘word’ has lost their mind.

Stay tuned for more…

Well, the one asking a price for something isn`t wrong, but the one willing to pay the cash ..

They should at the least have it registered for 10 years, which is the max at this time you can register any domain name for. But your right, only 1 year does not show much promise. It is something I point out for any big huge website, scary stuff.

And they shouldn’t allow just any keywords like that, it is totally spam that is going on!

    @ Gnomey

The “big” problem of credibility on net is basicaly splited on two major styles :

    - do it your own (way) - work hard to make an image an maintain, to be seen. Something like “hello, i`m here, you should cont me in too ..”

    - involve some “big” names in - several so called gurus would promote your (site, blog, idea, ebook, etc.). This sometime require either a biz (”I`ll give you x% of what I get”) or a direct close relation with gurus (including the probabil;ity that “John Doe” could be the guru undercover).

Which of this ways is moral and which is on scam borders, is not my job to persuade one or another here, in Levi`s blog. :-P

Just my purchase would more than renew their domain for 10 years…

But what really bugs me, more than just having the spam keyword pages, is that *I think* they used to have a policy against that, but for some reason (greed?) don’t have it anymore.

Well maybe it wasn’t doing as good as they thought? I don’t know, seems like search engines might block them out eventually if they keep it up.

    Yeah I don’t doubt it.

But on Shoemoney’s site he had an example. Search for “high traffic” or something and the MDW page for Traffic comes up.

So for the sake of my page on there, I hope it does get rankings :D

Our host, lunarpages.com, will only register domains two years out. It is no scam. Do you realize the kind of class action lawsuit I would have on my hands with a thousand people invested in a site, for a guaranteed 15 years? I’d have to be a complete idiot to take it down and face that litigation.

You say that like there aren’t a lot of complete idiots out there that would :D

Yeah, it looks like they’re only pretty much there to make money. It’s sort of a shame, I guess, but isn’t that the point of every business? I can’t understand why someone would pay for this when there are plenty of free wiki sites out there that allow you to do the same exact thing. Especially when they’re things like bestcreditcardstorecom - hehe, looks like you and that person are the only two people linking to that word.

LOL! These money wiki sites are ridiculous…. I don’t know why people want to buy words…. when there’s tons of other sites that sell words too.

I mean, props to the owner for selling words…. but that’s ridiculous.
