Take Action on Blog Action Day

blog action day banner

October 15th is Blog Action Day. What that is, is a day when every participating blogger will write a post about the environment, so the outcome is:

One issue. One day. Thousands of voices.

And I like the environment almost as much as I hate internet gurus, so I’ll be taking part. You should too :)

(What’s in it for you? A link on the participants page.)

Funny Friday: Good Links, Forum Posts, and DealDotCom (9/28/2007)

funny friday logo

TGIF! If you’re still stuck at work, here are some goodies to get you through the rest of the day:

MillionDollarWiki sucks, MillionEuroWiki sucks twice as much, but finally, this copycat sets itself apart.

Also, DealDotCom Sucks! It must be true because other people (as opposed to just me) think so!

But… what exactly is so bad about DealDotCom products?

So if DealDotCom isn’t great, what is? This website guaranteed to produce $2400 in monthly revenue, which just sold for the bargain basement price of $145.

Maybe it was a ripoff though? You can never be sure these days.

You can’t be too sure about Google, either, as they keep dishing out John Chow treatments.

But one thing you could do is skip out on link a dinking.

But whatever you do, don’t get lost.

Hire a Gang To Do Your Dirtywork

If you just go around in the light of day joining Digg circles and Stumble exchanges, you’re bound to be beaten. So why not lay low and get a gang to handle that stuff for you?

beat up gang members

Need to find a gang? No problem. Just head to GangClick.

Basically the site is full of “gang” members who scratch each other’s backs. Thug life at it’s finest.

It’s great for soliciting diggs, stumbles, and other busywork. It is definitely best for “one-click” things such as stumbling, but if you catch others in a good mood, they might give you two or three clicks.

You start out by helping others, and each time you help someone, you get a point. Then you use the points to post projects of your own.

The process is very easy, but it’s even easier to cheat. All you have to do is visit someone’s URL to get a point - you don’t even have to digg or stumble the page. I rely on the karma principle though - what goes around, comes around. If you use this to cheat others, others are surely cheating you.

Sign-up

To get started, just sign-up real quick. Then, once logged-in, click “Projects” in the header navigation. Then click the headlines of any offers that interest you. Fulfill the request and get points toward posting your own projects.

To post your own project, click “Create project” in the left sidebar. Just enter your URL and a couple instructions, and post it. Then hope for the best!

My Experience…

While there is still a low membership to this site, it’s getting a bit better.

I can usually get a few stumbles each time I post a link. That’s good because stumbles always come in handy.

I posted a Digg request once though, just to see if it worked… and it was pretty much pointless. You might get a few Diggs over a few weeks, which won’t do anything for you.

But for being somewhat ‘below the radar’ it’s pretty good.

My Advice

Make friends. When you complete a project for someone, leave a nice comment. You want everyone to get familiar with your username so you build up a reputation. Then when they see your name as the project poster, they might be more likely to help out.

More Advice

Want to know a great use for this?

Use your Alexa redirect URLs instead of normal URLs. That way, whenever someone clicks your link, they’re helping to boost your Alexa rank.

Then it doesn’t matter if they are cheating the system by not actually stumbling your site, because you still got that Alexa boost! ;)

Keeping Tabs on Those Sneaky Link Exchange Bandits

link exchange bandit

How often do you exchange links, only to find that the other webmaster has removed your link a few months down the road? There are a lot of sneaky webmasters like that, and I refer to them as link exchange bandits.

But as much as I hate their strategy, I would have to say, it probably works quite often. I just don’t have the time to keep track of every single link exchange or link purchase, and that’s what they’re hoping for. They just want to screw you over by removing your link, while you blindly keep sending traffic to them.

Not anymore though! I just signed-up for a new service at Text Link HQ. They monitor all of your link exchanges for you!

That’s exactly what I needed, and I’m betting that 99% of webmasters need this, too. All you do is input your link details and they do the monitoring, and they’ll even alert you whenever a link is removed!

All of that for only $15! Yep, it’s a $15 lifetime fee. That sure beats those $20/month private label article sites which are worth about $0/month.

I was pretty skeptical, but so far, the site is great. I’m still skeptical about the “lifetime” membership, but the risk is certainly worth $15.

Registration

So I paid and waited for my account to be activated… and waited… and waited. My account was never activated, so I got in touch with the owner, and he got things sorted out. Turns out there was probably a problem with PayPal’s sessions.

Note: When you pay, be sure to give PayPal lots of time to load before clicking the “back to merchant” link. That should take care of any problems.

If you sign-up and can’t login though, try the “Forgot Password?” feature to get a new password sent to you. That should take care of things (and you can change your password back to what your prefer from your control panel.)

The big problem I see here is that there’s no contact email on the website. I had to get in touch with the owner through webmaster forums, which not everyone will be able to do (or won’t attempt to do.) They lose some trust factor by not including any contact info.

The test drive

Anyway, I’m in, and it’s sweet. There are just two simple steps to get it working:

1) List all the URLs that you own or buy links for.

add your sites

2) Add the URLs where other sites link to yours, along with a couple details.

add links

Then the application takes care of everything.

It’s perfect for simple link exchanges, but it can get tricky, because you have to list the link details perfectly.

For example, the program will treat all these URLs differently:

http://internetmarketingsucks.com/blog/
http://internetmarketingsucks.com/blog
http://www.internetmarketingsucks.com/blog/
http://www.internetmarketingsucks.com/blog

So remember that, or you’ll be screaming at your computer while checking links! (At least I was…)

Does it work?

I’ve already found people that have removed my links just by setting this up. I just didn’t have the time to keep track of everything before because it wasn’t this easy. But now that I have this, I’ll be cracking down on these unscrupulous webmasters! :)

Unfortunately, it doesn’t check for a “nofollow” tag on your link.

But despite that…

This is possibly the best $15 I’ve spent on something for internet marketing!

I’m still not sure on the ‘lifetime’ account promise, though. You can’t be 100% sure that you’ll be using this free for the next 10 years. If the site gets sold, a new owner could start doing $15/month.

But I’m happy for now!

Million Dollar Wiki Update #1 - A Total Waste of Time

Judging by the title, it’s safe to say that so far, the Million Dollar Wiki has been a complete and utter waste of time.

If you want to see my testing page, it is the Exercise page. I figured that was a topic that could be applicable to the general population, including internet marketers, but it wouldn’t be focused just on internet marketers.

mdw exercise page style 1

So far the page has had a few hundred views, but far fewer uniques, which is probably just from me editing the page. After checking my stats, I’ve had no website visitors from MDW, no affiliate commissions, and no Adsense clicks.

But my bank account is $90 less than it was.

So here are my three million dollar tips:

1) Don’t try to make your MDW page anything like Wikipedia.
2) Cater it to the type of people who are buying MDW pages, because those are the only people that will see it.
3) If you haven’t bought a page yet, don’t do it!

I went with the Wikipedia style page for the first part of the test, and it’s been useless, so it will be updated. I should have done something more like Shoemoney did with his free ringtones page. It is nice and simple (and is a lot quicker to make!)

So stay tuned for my next update on this link farm they call the Million Dollar Wiki.

BlogRush Getting The Press It Deserves

BlogRush has been getting a ton of press, most likely because John Reese started it. But, like most things in internet marketing life, it didn’t live up to the hype.

Here is the truth:

It seems all that buzz went to waste…

The Essence of Guru

Come, sit at my feet to worship, and bring money. Seriously, if you really believe that the secrets to success are even secrets at all, then you don’t understand how adaptive and personalized success can be. Find a mentor, find some peers, but stay the hell away from gurus trying to sell a newsletter with access to “secret tools that the search engines don’t want you to know about.”
