I Do Follow, But I Don’t Plug In

say no to nofollow

Some time ago, the “DoFollow” Wordpress plugin got a lot of buzz amongst bloggers who wanted to reward their commentators (or just from sneaky webmasters who wanted to encourage comments as much as possible.)

I thought it was a neat idea, but I wondered why you needed a plugin to do that. I mean, all you’re doing is removing the rel=”nofollow” from your template. It’s kind of like that optimal title plugin. There’s no point in adding yet another plugin (which will slow down your blog) just to handle a one-time fix you can do in Notepad.

So I just went ahead and removed that code myself. If you want to do the same, I recommend reading this post on Blogstrokes. It should give you all the info.

Now we’ll see if this blog gets included on those “Blogs that DoFollow” aka “Spam These Blogs!!” lists that are popping up. It shouldn’t matter though, because Akismet takes care of all my comment spam so I don’t even have to see it. Take that spammers!

Is that really all it takes? LOL!! Well, sometimes I just get stuck in “plug-in” mode and stop thinking. Thanks for reminding me.

  2. Sucker on August 23rd, 2007

Yep, it’s just like editing the registry on your computer. It’s pretty simple as long as you don’t screw something up in the process!

  3. Blog Strokes on August 24th, 2007

    Thanks for the mention.

I have also used custom title code for quite some time. I always thought that it was more of a template function than a plugin function, and I even did an article on the code I use at Blog Strokes.

One distinction I would be sure to point out is that the dofollow code tweak modifies core files, so, you have to re do it each time you upgrade WordPress, whereas the title tweak is in the theme and won’t have to be redone.

Some people may have problems remembering to re do their tweaks, but other than that it’s a great option.

  4. Sucker on August 24th, 2007

Good thing you pointed that out!

It’s worth noting the one tiny drawback is that you do have to re do this each time you upgrade WordPress.

However, you usually have to deactivate and reactivate plugins and stuff anyway, so it’s not like this adds any extra time.

Akismet does do a great job. If to many get through you can also add something like math challenge – the combo works very well for me.

  6. Sucker on September 2nd, 2007

    Thanks for stopping by John!

I’ve seen math challenge used on some blogs, it looks pretty good. I’m going to stick it out with just Akismet for now (unless the spam gets too bad, of course.)

  7. Tecnologia on September 9th, 2007

Nice job there, very good initiative.

  8. Fashion Girl on November 2nd, 2007

  10. Melanie Phung on March 5th, 2008

Awesome. I’ll be switching over to WordPress and the rel=nofollow in the standard install always bugged me.

  11. outdoor storage sheds on March 24th, 2008

Thanks for the tip. I knew there had to be an easier way to get rid of that no follow code. I’ll be doing that on all my wordpress blogs from here out. I hate having to keep track of plugins

  12. free ipod touch on April 19th, 2008

Great tip. I think I’m going to add that for my site to try and encourage some more commenting. I haven’t really got big enough traffic for it to make any kind of difference yet though.

It’s something I’ll do in the near future I think.

  13. james on April 26th, 2008

    great post
    askimet is brilliant

i use no follow wordpress plugin to encourage comments and works great

  14. Business Seller on April 28th, 2008

    I think that’s a great idea.

I just started a blog not too long ago, but I use the plugin. I’m going to use your tutorial sometimes and get it hooked right once and for all.

  15. Akismet is great, Sometimes changing code is a dangerous and not so easy for someone who doesn’t understand coding at all and that’s when the plug-in comes in handy.

  16. Internet Marketing on July 4th, 2008

Yeah i do agree with all the above comments , by adding those do follow plug in your commenters can get high back links , nice job

  17. Jason wallace on July 4th, 2008

  19. ???? ????? ????? on July 22nd, 2008

    thanks for this post

    i really like your blog

  20. Claudia on July 23rd, 2008

After reading your post I installed Akismet and now I think I am going to take off the nofollow in comments.

Maybe I will get more visitors.

  21. Martin in Thailand on July 24th, 2008

@Claudia: Sure you will. I just left a comment there :-)

  22. Adsense tips on July 24th, 2008

In one of my blog akismet dont really work very well. Its probably got to do with the fact that I had to add the akismet key manually. I always get the mobile phone spam everyday, the comment are moderated anyway but it tiresome to go through hundreds of those.

At the end I use the math-comment-spam-protection. It works wonders

  23. Hate spam on July 29th, 2008

I would claudia. To be honest i have posted comment in only two blogs , this and pingable not because they have “do follow” but this blog does have some wicked sense of humor about it and well backlinks is free :-) . I think it is mean for blog owners which do not follow the links as they don’t even recognize the people who come and post their comments. I hate spam as much as you do and i think people could find some other way to keep spam away.

  24. Kevin on July 30th, 2008

Thanks for joining the Do Follow revolution!

  25. Guinness Clothing on August 19th, 2008

Thats defo a far better way to remove the nofollow.

There really is no point having a plugin that reduces performance when it’s so easy to remove the tags yourself.

  26. Ihor on August 20th, 2008

    He-he, shame on a Wordpress :D

  27. Royal dragon on August 22nd, 2008

    Blog spamming sucks!

  28. Affordable SEO on September 22nd, 2008

Do follow blogs is the way to move forward and this is mainly because it encourages more people to comment.

Yes there is the threat of spammers and I think this can be solved by various methods. Spamming ownt be a problem if you are an active blogger.

The best part is readers get something in return too.

  29. Branding Company on September 22nd, 2008

Well said. Indeed there is no need to use a plugin to remove the nofollow tag, that is provided that you are at least understand a bit of scripting. You may of course follow user friendly guides on removing nofollow tags.

  30. Jean Bureaustoel on September 29th, 2008

spam sucks, why do you follow?

  31. Sohbet on October 10th, 2008

i use no follow wordpress plugin to encourage comments and works great

    Great post, thank

  33. Kim, Sales Training Specialist on November 8th, 2008

Yes its right, do follow blog causes spam. Good Graphic design.

  34. Andy on November 9th, 2008

Good article about spam. I wish more people would follow your advice instead of just complaining about it.

  35. Joe Kiteboarder on November 21st, 2008

it a b s stand on looking at the web. when the nofollow wasnt invented there would be no spam. think about it.

  36. Really Drunk Girls on December 7th, 2008

How kind of you! Just so you know, the keyword “drunk” is what got me here. I’m really into drunk chicks, in case you didn’t know.

  37. Timon Weller on December 29th, 2008

One confusing question, your comment links still have nofollow on them… ?

  38. Sussex Web Designer on January 3rd, 2009

All of the websites I create don’t use nofollow – it should be down to Google to work out how to rank websites correctly without giving webmasters control over which links are ranked. Don’t use nofollow!

  39. ernie on January 17th, 2009

If the information that is provided is useful
and relevant to what is being discussed then
I don’t see anything wrong with an individual
adding a link to their site. Still I see many bloggers complaining if someone leaves a link that is new to their site or is not another blogger as if they never had to work to get back links and bring their page into search engine rankings.

  40. LKat on February 2nd, 2009

I actually had no idea that WordPress made all comment links NoFollow by default. I agree though it’s kind of pointless to install a plugin for something so simple.

  41. Andrey on February 5th, 2009

    Thanks for the tip!

  42. Wii Accessories on February 5th, 2009

I never thought how the plugin could be slowing it down, for just a quick fix…..

  43. Poker on February 7th, 2009

I agree. If people take the time to read your blog post, they deserve some link love by commenting.

  44. gagner de l'argent on February 13th, 2009

Exactly, it is time to say stop the spammer! as a result of them the notion nofflow no longer make sense. good luck for your mission.

    Good post.

    Thanks

  45. skyje on February 19th, 2009

Glad to have another dofollow blog to visit!:-

Your blog is already doing so well so this would be more of a “thank you” to your readers, I guess.

  46. Game Blogger on February 24th, 2009

Has anyone ever analyzed the cost/benefit ratio of having more comments by enabling DoFollow which means more content vs less comments but less outbound links? It seems like more content is worth more than trying to limit outbound links especially if you’re moderating comments anyway. Anyway, I was looking for a DoFollow plugin and realized I was being stupid as your posts says. I went and made the simple edit to my template. Thanks for the advice.

  47. MarbleHost.com on March 2nd, 2009

Akismet is something great, almost all the spam are stopped.

  48. Cazare in Bucuresti on March 22nd, 2009

The problem with do-follow is people will spam. If a blog is good enough then the blog owner won’t need to have do-follow because people will comment to put their point of view accross, not to gain a back link.

The BBC is a perfect example of this. There are no links in the forums and blogs, yet they have many users.

However, when a blog is starting and it wants to get a upper hand, their is no harm in attracting people who want do-follow links, because some will become hooked, so even if you change to no-follow, people will still comment.

  49. Regim Hotelier on March 29th, 2009

Well, in either case, you can still call it spam. Whether the visitor IS interested in your blog/post and comments with interest or not and just wants a link. In other words, it depends on the blog owner himself/herself whether (s)he is willing to appreciate the comments and accepting the links in exchange or just as a sign of appreciation, simple as that. If not, then by all means, removing the ‘URL’ field takes 2 seconds! Google that out. Don’t leave the URL and then judging people for spamming, most are not spamming, they post with interest and once they see the option of leaving their website URL, why not?
I’m all for DOFOLLOW or just remove the URL field! Don’t leave it with nofollow, that’s more a trick in making some people comment without interest. So anyway, all for dofollow,
    Cheers!

ading links to your site can decrese your site SEO, you need to ad your site link to more directorise than links in your site.

    thanks for info.
